The Risk with Standard Processing

For travelers planning to leave in a month or six weeks, relying on standard passport processing through the post office presents considerable risk of missing your trip. Current delays and long processing times could result in not receiving your passport in time for your trip. This is especially risky during periods of high demand and operational slowdowns at passport centers.

If you're beyond the 14-day window for emergency passport applications but concerned that standard processing won't be fast enough, you should wait until you can apply as an emergency.

Why Proof of Travel is Required

The U.S. Passport Agency can issue only a limited number of emergency passports each day. To manage this, the U.S. Passport Agency requires proof of imminent travel from passport applicants seeking expedited processing.

Expedited Passport Travel Requirements

  • Travel within 14 days: for immediate departures without a visa.
  • Travel within 30 days: if a visa is required for your destination.

If you have proof of departure within the required times you qualify to use a passport expeditor

Ensure that the travel dates on your itinerary align with those on your Passport application forms (such as DS-11 or DS-82) and both documents must include the applicant’s name.

Travel Itineraries

Common required itineraries for travel documentation include:

  • Airline reservations - copy of your flight itinerary, plane ticket, electronic ticket or e-mail confirmation of your airline ticket. Ticket must show you are traveling within 14 days (or 30 days if a visa is necessary). The plane ticket must be issued by the airline or travel agent and show your name, travel date, and destination.

  • Cruise Ship Booking - copy of your cruise itinerary/ticket.

  • Business Letter - (see sample letter) Must be on company letterhead, anticipated dates of business travel, brief statement describing the nature of business to be performed, original signature of someone in your organization other than yourself.
  • Employment Letter - (see sample letter) In some circumstances employers require passports for employment such as airline pilots and flight attendants.

  • Driving to Canada or Mexico - (see sample letter) It is best to use Hotel Reservation. Not all agencies accept driving letters.

  • Hotel Reservations - for Canada and Mexico only. The hotel reservation must show the name of the hotel, the applicant’s name, and the dates the applicant will be staying. This must also show you will be traveling within 14 days (or 30 days if a visa is necessary).
